Zusammen mit Billy Cobham und Lenny White gehört Mouzon zu den wichtigsten Rock Jazz -Drummern der 70er Jahre. Der 1948 geborene Mouzon zeigte schon bald in seiner Schulzeit in Charleston besonders Musikalisches Talent. Trotz verschiedener Auszeichnungen als Percussionist begann er aber in New York ein Medizinstudium und arbeitete nebenbei mit Jazz-Soulmusikern und im Showbusiness am Brodway. (Dies bewog ihn auch später zu einer Schauspieler-Ausbildung). Seit seiner Mitgliedschaft zur Ur-Formation von "Weather Report" ist Mouzon ein begriff. Wichtige Stationen waren auch seine Zusammenarbeit mit McCoy Tyner, Larry Corryell u.a. Seine Leistung besteht besonders darin, dass er auch seine Qualitäten als Leiter einer (noch) namenlosen Band.
